Resounding with history, less than a century ago this area was a frontier of vast mountains, abundant wildlife and the most amazing geothermal features ever witnessed by man. Visited by many of the Native American tribes and the first fur traders, Yellowstone National Park was named as the ”first national park of the world” in 1872 by the U.S. Congress and President Grant. In 1903, Teddy Roosevelt, laid the cornerstone to the triumphal arch, officially dedicating Yellowstone as a national park and positioning Gardiner as the first and original entrance to Yellowstone National Park. That arch still stands today as testimony to the greatness and beauty of this wild frontier, with the inscription reading, “For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People”. Gardiner, Montana maintains the historical attribute of being the original entrance, and today is the only entrance to remain open year-round to any and all Park activities; this makes Gardiner the perfect place to stay for hunting trips, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, and even wolf watching!
